Trailer Leasing at 50
Celebrating 50 years
this year, trailer leasing has become a mature, industry standard for
alternative trailer supply.
Operating lease companies own an estimated
400,000+ dry vans, flatbeds and reefers that are made available to
customers for rental or term lease from hundreds of facilities throughout
North America. If you need a trailer(s) for a short term situation or as
an alternative to conventional purchasing and financing, you can generally
find the size, shape and type of trailer you need from any of dozens of
companies. Like most mature industries, you can pick from an assortment of
national, regional or local providers. In addition, you can select from a
menu of rental/lease structures, and your choice of maintenance packages,
road service programs, insurance alternatives, and wireless trailer
tracking services. You can have your trailers included in a turn-key lease
with tractors and/or drivers, or you can pick them up ala carte from
trailer-only lessors.
Despite this voluminous range of services and
options, the number of trailers owned by operating lease companies
represents less than 10% of the total semi-trailer population on the road
today. Furthermore, while carrier performance and revenue ton miles have
been strong in recent months, operating lessors have faced some of the
worst market conditions in their history.
What gives? If operating leasing offers so many
attractive features, why doesn’t it represent 50% or more of the global
trailer population like it does with ocean containers, rail cars, ships or
even airplanes?
